External weather influences can affect most polymers. UV radiation in particular initiates degradation mechanisms that cause plastics to become brittle and discoloured within a few years. Moisture from rainwater or condensation can also damage plastics, especially polycondensation polymers. A reaction of the molecular chains with water leads to them splitting and ultimately to mechanical degradation. Heat further enhances both of these mechanisms. Alternating stresses caused by heat and cold also contribute to this.
