About us

We have been producing the biaxially oriented polyester film HOSTAPHAN™ in Wiesbaden since 1954. The areas of application range from high-tech industrial applications, e.g. for electromobility, furniture surfaces or medical-pharmaceutical products, to packaging films for food. Building on more than seventy years of experience, we develop the right solution for our customers.

Mitsubishi Polyester Film GmbH is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001, DIN EN ISO 14001 and DIN EN ISO 50001.

Company history

2026

Commissioning of our new, state-of-the-art polyester film plant in Wiesbaden.

2022

Mitsubishi Chemical Holding Corporation and Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation become the Mitsubishi Chemical Group (MCG), under whose umbrella all companies appear with the same name/logo.

2017

From 1 April 2017, the companies become Mitsubishi Chemical (MCC). Mitsubishi Plastics (MPI) and Mitsubishi Rayon (MRC) are merged into one company under the name Mitsubishi Chemical.

2015

HOSTAPHAN™ celebrates its 60th anniversary.

2014

Mitsubishi Polyester Film GmbH opens Europe’s first ALPOLIC™ composite panel plant in the Kalle-Albert industrial park in Wiesbaden.

2008

Integration of the Mitsubishi Polyester Film Group into the business division of Mitsubishi Plastics, Inc., under the parent company Mitsubishi Chemical Holding Corporation.

2005

50th anniversary of the HOSTAPHAN™ brand.

1998

Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation acquires Hoechst AG’s shares in Hoechst Diafoil GmbH. The Mitsubishi Polyester Film Group is founded.

1997/98

Start of a high-speed three-layer extrusion line in Wiesbaden.

1991/93

Founding of Hoechst Diafoil GmbH, a joint venture between Hoechst and Mitsubishi.
Construction of a production facility for video films in Wiesbaden.

1985

Investment in a production facility for tensilised and super-tensilised HOSTAPHAN™ in Wiesbaden; the films with high mechanical strength in the longitudinal direction, specially developed for magnetic tape applications.

1979

Acquisition of PET film production from Celanese, the predecessor of today’s Mitsubishi Polyesterfilm Inc. in Greer, South Carolina, USA.

1971

First attempts at extruding two polymer layers.

1969

Commissioning of a 4-metre-wide production facility, the widest and most modern boPET film plant of its time.

1963

First experiments with inline coating.

1957

Start of the first commercial production facility for HOSTAPHAN™ in Wiesbaden.

1955

First pilot plant for HOSTAPHAN™, producing biaxially oriented PET film (boPET) in Wiesbaden. The maximum width is 0.8 metres.

1953

Acquisition of a licence to produce polyester film from ICI.

1952

Re-establishment of Kalle & Co. AG in Wiesbaden as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hoechst AG following the post-war period, when the plant was operated under the administration of the US authorities.

1941

J. R. Whinfield and J. T. Dickson of the Calico Printers Association invent polyester, made from ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Sale of rights to Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI).

1925

First film production in Wiesbaden, Cellophan®.

1907

Merger of Kalle & Co. KG and Hoechst AG.

1863

Founding of the company “Meister Lucius & Co“ in Frankfurt-Höchst, the predecessor of Hoechst AG and Kalle & Co.KG in Wiesbaden, the current headquarters of Mitsubishi Polyester Film GmbH. Both companies focus on textile dye production.
